Founded in 1860 by Thomas Hill, Sunspel has been making garments in the UK for over 150 years. Renowned for its in-novative manufacturing processes and using its own premium, soft and natural fabrics Sunspel continues to handcraft its iconic T-Shirts at its factory in Long Eaton, near Nottingham. Today the Sunspel brand has grown into a comprehensive collection of elevated, understated essentials that put equal emphasis on style and comfort. The definition of everyday elegance; shifting gear seamlessly from indoor to outdoor, weekday to weekend and from season to season, Sunspel’s wear-forever wardrobe is as versatile as it is effortless.

For over 150 years Sunspel has been making garments in England. Using its own premium, soft and natural fabrics Sun-spel continues to handcraft its iconic T-Shirts at its factory in Long Eaton, near Nottingham. Sunspel has been a family business for most of its history and these values remain at the core of the brand today. Founded in Nottingham, the Hill family moved their business to the current Long Eaton factory in 1937. The technology at Long Eaton may have changed since then, but the commitment to community and a job well done remains the same.

For over 150 years, we have been sourcing the finest raw materials from around the world and innovating to develop luxury fabrics that are entirely unique. Our extensive archives are a rich and constant source of inspiration. Our supreme quality long staple cotton jersey is a descendent of the original lisle cotton first used by Sunspel to produce some of the world’s earliest T- Shirts.

An uncompromising commitment to quality fabrics is at the core of the Sunspel brand. Fit and comfort are key to all Sunspel products. We’re known for soft fabrics and unfussy designs that redefine everyday essentials.

The T-Shirt remains one of Sunspel’s definitive styles. Since 1860, we’ve been refining this simple item to make it as soft, light and as comfortable as possible. Today’s T-Shirt is almost identical to the original 1950s model, only slightly updated with a unique two-fold British-knitted jersey fabric derived from the original cotton lisle used on the earliest T-Shirts ever made.

Peter Hill, another grandson of the brand’s founder, developed the cellular knitted fabric used to make our Polo Shirts during the 1950s, working on the traditional lace machines at the Long Eaton factory. The comfort and breathable qual-ities of this unique material made it perfect for summer wear, and the Sunspel Polo has gone on to achieve cult status, with the Riviera Polo design being created for Daniel Craig’s James Bond in ‘Casino Royale’ (2006). The clean aesthetic and minimal detailing make the Sunspel Polo a modern classic to this day.

A true Sunspel innovation, the men’s Boxer Short was introduced to Britain in 1947 by John Hill, the grandson of Sunspel’s founder. Made with the best quality cotton, this original design has been perfected over the years with subtle refinements and new cuts, but the Hill classic remains instantly recognisable. The Sunspel Boxer Short secured its place in British culture in 1985 when Nick Kamen stripped down to a pair in the Levi’s Launderette advert.
